100-Day Cough: What It Is and What to Do About It

The Hyfe Mind

December 15, 2023
CoughPro is not a medical product. It is a wellness app intended only for users to obtain a better understanding of their cough. It is not intended to diagnose, monitor, or treat any illness.

We at Hyfe, Inc., are a company devoted to working on tools to better understand the importance of cough. It is Hyfe’s intention in the future to seek regulatory approval for medical products that analyze cough in order that they may be used to diagnose, monitor, and facilitate better treatment of respiratory illnesses.

The United Kingdom and parts of Europe are currently witnessing a significant resurgence of whooping cough, colloquially known as the "100-day cough." Whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory infection and this ongoing surge - on the tail of the Covid Pandemic - is worrying both healthcare professionals and the public at large.

Here's what you can do to understand better what is going on and to mitigate the cough if you or someone close to you has it.

What Is The 100-Day Cough?

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly infectious bacterial disease, known for its severe coughing fits, can last for several weeks or months, leading to its colloquial name, the "100-day cough."

Initial symptoms mimic a common cold, often leading to misdiagnosis. The characteristic audible 'whoop' sound following a coughing fit is a key diagnostic sign, particularly in children, though it is less common in adults and infants.

The disease spreads via droplet transmission and it's particularly dangerous for infants and young children and can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, hemoptysis, otitis media, and seizures. The recent increase in cases and the corresponding media coverage highlight the ongoing need for awareness and public health measures to control and prevent the spread of this disease.

The Current Numbers in 2023

There has been a substantial increase in whooping cough cases in England and Wales. The number of cases has risen by approximately 230% compared to this time last year.

The National Health Service (NHS) has released official advice regarding this rise in whooping cough cases. This indicates a proactive approach by health authorities to manage and inform the public about this infectious disease.

The Value of Tracking Coughs

One critical aspect in managing whooping cough is the early detection, prompt treatment, and tracking the dynamics of its symptoms. The disease's onset can be subtle - and easily mistaken for a cold. Some people can think this is COVID, too. Pertussis’ persistence often leads to the normalization of symptoms, making it crucial to have objective data on symptoms, such as cough frequency and severity over time.

Here's where technology plays a pivotal role:

AI-Powered Cough Monitoring Smartphone applications - such as CoughPro - offer a convenient and effective way to monitor coughs passively and continuously. These apps count coughs over time as well as analyze cough frequency and patterns, providing valuable data for patients and leading to more insightful conversations with healthcare providers. It also helps track the disease's progression and evaluate treatment response and effectiveness.

“A 100-day cough is less worrisome if it's going down week after week, which is hard to know with no objective data”, mentions Dr. Mindaugas Galvosas, a Medical Doctor working with cough monitoring technologies. “The value of monitoring cough dynamics is also in having peace of mind for the patient (or parent) and fewer return visits to the doctor’s office for people who are actually getting better (albeit slowly)”.

Empowering Patients and Parents: For parents, especially those with young children, such smartphone apps can be a vital tool in identifying early signs of whooping cough or a worsening respiratory condition, enabling timely medical intervention. The application uses AI to passively count coughs all the time, even during the night. It also shows insights on a user’s cough trend, and cough patterns by hour of the day.

The Role of Vaccination and Public Awareness

While monitoring technology is a valuable tool, prevention remains paramount. The pertussis vaccine, usually given in combination with diphtheria and tetanus vaccines, is the most effective preventive measure. However, waning immunity in older children and adults underscores the need for booster shots.

Public awareness campaigns are essential in educating about whooping cough symptoms, vaccination schedules, and the importance of cough monitoring. The NHS has been proactive in issuing guidance and advice in light of the recent surge.

The resurgence of whooping cough is a public health concern that requires a multifaceted approach. Alongside vaccination and public health measures, leveraging technology for objective symptom tracking presents a novel and practical solution. By combining medical intervention with innovative monitoring tools, we can better manage the "100-day cough" and safeguard public health.
